What is biofeedback therapy?

We don’t usually think much about how we go to the toilet but normal bowel motion actually relies on precisely timed muscle movements and coordination.

When this gets disrupted, it can lead to functional bowel disorders, such as chronic constipation (poor coordination), incontinence (weakness), or rectal pain (muscle spasm).

Biofeedback therapy helps retrains these muscles. Using real-time visual feedback, it allows you to see how your bowel muscles are working and then guides you through targeted exercises to restore normal function. Clinical trials have shown biofeedback provide to long-term improvements in up to 79 - 91% of patients - more effective than education, pelvic floor therapy, and laxatives alone [1-3].

Traditional biofeedback is only available in specialist clinics, where long waitlists make it hard to access. A full course of therapy usually takes 6 to 8 weekly training sessions at the clinic.

Home biofeedback is the convenient, private, and affordable option. Daily training sessions of 10 minutes offers the same benefits as in-clinic treatment [1-3]. Best of all, it fits into your schedule so you can do the therapy when and where it works best for you.
